Installation
- Do I need to close my web browser before installing the TestGen Plug-in?
Yes.
- How do I verify that the TestGen Plug-in was installed properly?
You can verify that the TestGen Plug-in was installed properly by clicking this link. Or, go to the Start Menu, select TestGen, then select the TestGen Plug-in, and click the Test the Plug-in option. - When I try to install TestGen, my anti-virus software detects a virus. What should I do?
Turn off your anti-virus software before installing TestGen. Be sure to turn it back on once you have completed the installation process. - Do I need to uninstall an earlier version of TestGen before installing the new version?
When you install TestGen, you are given the option to remove previous versions from your computer. It is recommended that you select Yes to do so. Tests and testbanks created with earlier versions of TestGen work with the latest version. - When I try to install TestGen and/or the TestGen Plug-in on my Windows 2000 or Windows XP computer, the installation terminates. What do I do?
To install the TestGen program, you must log on as a user who has Administrator rights (for Windows 2000 and Windows XP). Some schools only grant Administrator privilege to persons in the Information Technology (IT) group, thereby restricting this access for other users (for example, for those who may be using computers that are shared in a lab situation). If you think this may be the case, contact your local IT person to assist you in the installation. - I see a message asking whether I want to consolidate my testbanks. What does this mean?
Consolidation means that TestGen has found older testbanks (.BOK files) outside the TestGen program directory, and it would like to move them into your TestGen program directory. TestGen will ask you whether you want to consolidate the files either during the install or when the program starts. If it asks you when the program starts, you may click the How Do I Decide? button for more information. - When I open my TestGen 7.x help, I cannot see the table of contents. What should I do?
If you are unable to see the Help file left hand navigation panel and you have Flash 8, you will need to allow Webhelp in Flash 8 Global Security Settings. Please go to the Macromedia website settings manager page and follow these steps.- From the Edit Locations drop-down menu, select Add Location.
- Type the following (or click the Browse button to add the following locations to the Flash Player Settings Manager):
c:Program FilesTestGenWebHelpwf_master.htm
and
c:Program FilesTestGenWebHelpwf_master.swf - Click Always Allow.
- Close your Internet Explorer browser and try the TestGen Help again. You should now be able to see the left hand navigation panel.
- What should I do if I forget my password?
On the password entry dialog, click the Hint button. If you entered a hint when originally created your password, the hint should help you remember your password. If the hint does not help, click the Forgot it button and write down the code the program displays. If you are using a Pearson Education product, contact Pearson Product Support, give them the password code, and they will retrieve your password. (Tip: Once you find out the password, write it down in a safe place.)

Working with tests and testbanks
- What is the difference between a testbank and a test?
A testbank is a collection of test items, usually organized by chapter and/or question type. A testbank might have question descriptors, such as difficulty level or page reference, that help you select items to put on a test. A test contains questions selected from a testbank and can be sorted by testbank order, question type, and other criteria. A test can have page headers and footers. A test can be set up for print, the web, or QuizMaster. Answer keys are provided for all tests.
- Is there a quick way to see how many and what types of questions are in a testbank?
Yes. In TestGen 7, select a testbank in the Testbank Library or in the testbank editing window. Then click the Testbank Info button on the standard toolbar. In TestGen 5.5, select 'Testbank Info' from the View menu. You can see a count of questions by chapter, question type, static vs. algorithmic, and other categories.
- Is there a quick way to see how many questions are on a test?
Yes. In TestGen 7, the total number of questions on a test is displayed at the top of the test window (bottom in TestGen 5.5).
- I made a test and saved it during my last session. How do I re-open the test to edit it?
In TestGen 7, you make see your test file listed in the Recent Tests column of the Startup window. If so, just click the file name and the test will open. Otherwise, select 'Open' or 'Open Test…' from the File menu. By default, TestGen looks for test files in the Tests folder first. If your test file is not in the Tests folder, navigate to another location on your hard disk to find the test file. When you find the test file, select it and click Open to open the test in the test window.
- Will I be able to use tests and testbanks created in an earlier version of TestGen when I update to the latest version?
Yes! You can convert older tests and testbanks simply by opening them in the latest version of TestGen. - I am running TestGen 6.0 My testbank says it was built in TestGen 7.3. Can I use this?
No. TestGen tests and testbanks are not backward compatible. You need to upgrade to the latest version of TestGen.
- I am running TestGen 7.3 My testbank says it was built in TestGen 6.0. Can I use this?
Yes!. TestGen tests and testbanks are are always forward compatible. Simply open your testbank or test and start to work. - I am using Microsoft® Internet Explorer and am having a problem viewing tests with the TestGen Plug-in. What can I do?
If you are using Internet Explorer, you may have to modify your browser settings to allow cookies (information that a website stores on your hard disk so that it can remember something about you at a later time). To check your browser type and version, click About from the Help menu. To configure Internet Explorer browser settings:- Select Internet Options from the Internet Explorer Tools menu.
- On the Security tab, click Custom Level. Click Enable under Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins.
- On the Advanced tab, click Enable third-party browser extensions under Browsing.
- On the Privacy tab, move the slider to Low or Accept All Cookies.
- When I start TestGen 5.5 on my computer, I get a message stating 'Different versions of the following fonts are already installed in your System.' What does this mean?
This happens if you use TestGen 5.5 with incompatible versions of QuizMaster or TestGen Plug-in. These programs check if the fonts have been updated. If you are using TestGen 5.5, you should be using QuizMaster 4.1 and TestGen Plug-in 3.1
- I saved my test as a PDF file and I don’t have an answer key. What should I do?
We designed the PDF export not to contain an answer key so that the file could be posted for student use. In order to retain an answer key for this file, we recommend that you save a TestGen version of this test before saving the test in PDF format. Then you can refer back to the TestGen file for the answer key to your test.
- Can I export question points for WebCT?
No. WebCT does not support points for questions.
- Does TestGen export tests that can be used in WebCT VISTA?
Yes, export to WebCT Vista and CE 6 is available with TestGen 7.3 and later.
- I want to open my TestGen test in Microsoft Word. How do I do that?
You can export the text to a Formatted Text File (RTF). This produces an RTF file that can be opened with MS Word 2000 or later. To do this:- Create or open the TestGen test you want to export.Format the test so that it displays the information in the way you want to export it.Select Export from the File menu. Choose to export the exam to a Formatted Text File (RTF). Name the file, including an .RTF extension. Choose where you want to save it.
- Open this file in Microsoft Word or your favorite word processor.
Check the TestGen Help under 'Exporting Tests to Text and RTF files' for more details about these steps and preserving fonts and formatting during the export.

- Can I exchange test files between my Mac and my PC?
For computers running Macintosh OS X, you can convert your Windows TestGen test (.tst) and testbank (.bok) files to work with the Macintosh version of TestGen. Download the file converter.

Printing
- I am having a problem printing my test. What can I do?
Make sure you have added (installed) the printer to your computer and that you are using the latest manufacturer's print driver software for this printer. Consult your operating system documentation for instructions on this process. If you are able to print other documents, this may not be the cause of your problem. - I have the printer installed properly with the latest manufacturer's print driver, but I still cannot print my test. What else might be causing the problem?
Some printers do not allow the setting for a bottom margin to be less than a half inch. To check the current setting, from the File menu, click Page Setup. If the setting for margin set for Bottom is 0.5, try 0.75 inch.
